Kristen was a new patient to the Medi Tresse Westchester, NY office. Her hair loss started gradually a little over 15+ years ago. Her concern was continuing to lose more hair. The goal for herself was to stop the current hair loss and start to regrow some of her hair back.
She has tried Minoxidil as a part of past treatments prior to her initial consultation with Medi Tresse. She came to Medi Tresse seeking a solution to have healthy, thick hair once more. She was diagnosed with Androgenic Alopecia, with a history of telogen effluvium as well.
Androgenic Alopecia, which is also known as female pattern hair loss (FPHL), is the most common cause of hair thinning and hair miniaturization. Hair miniaturization occurs when the growth phase of the hair follicle is shortened causing it to produce a smaller and thinner hair. If not treated, the affected hair will continue to get small and can disappear completely.
Telogen Effluvium is the second most common form of female hair loss, according to the American Hair Loss Association, and “a condition that causes an increased number of hairs to enter the telogen, or resting phase. The additional shedding usually occurs in response to various stresses such as emotional trauma, post-pregnancy and illness, major surgery, and certain medications.”
While it is normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day, during a Telogen Effluvium episode you can notice more excessive shedding. The telogen phase of the hair cycle is the resting phase, and during a Telogen Effluvium either the telogen phase is extended or an abnormal number of hairs enter this phase. It usually presents as a diffuse hair loss, meaning coming from all parts of the scalp. Most commonly a woman will see increased shedding of hair. This can be caused by pregnancy, rapid weight loss, protein deficiency, emotional stress, physical illness, surgery, trauma, and some medications. Fortunately, it is usually reversible and complete regrowth occurs in about 1-2 years.
With all of our treatments, we have three main goals: stop further loss, make the hair you have thicker, healthier, and if possible regrow hair. We like to remind all of our patients that attaining any of these goals is a success.
Since her Telogen Effluvium has been resolved prior to her current treatment, Kristen and the Medi Tresse team decided that the best plan for her would be to continue Minoxidil, and add in PRP Therapy and supplements to focus on treating her Androgenic Alopecia.
Minoxidil is a topical formula to help promote hair growth, and can assist with the effects of scarring alopecia.
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, or PRP Therapy, has been used for hair regrowth and regeneration for more than twenty years. At Medi Tresse, we can use therapeutic injections of platelet-rich plasma to address female hair loss. The injections do more than just strengthen hairs that are already present. With this treatment, we can use the natural physical recovery process to reactivate dormant follicles and heal them at a cellular level. PRP Therapy is a safe procedure with many studies confirming its capacity to help with both male and female hair loss.
Lastly, supplements for hair regrowth are important for any individual going through female hair loss. As a part of the Healthy Body Bundle, the Tresse Fortifier, Revitalizer, and Prebiotic are exclusively sold by Medi Tresse. The Healthy Body Bundle addresses total body inflammation starting in the gut while supporting nutritional factors that may play a role in hair growth and shedding in a three-step oral program. Nourishing your body with the prebiotics it needs can grow and regrow stronger, longer, fuller hair.
PRP Therapy for Androgenic Alopecia is available at the following Medi Tresse locations: Boston, Worcester, Westchester, New York City offices, and the Chattanooga office.
The before and growing photos below are eighteen months apart. Kristen is happy with the current results and is excited to continue her treatment plan with the Medi Tresse team, which is a PRP booster every 6 months, and continuing with Minoxidil and supplements for hair regrowth.
