Amanda was a new patient to our Medi Tresse office in 2022. Amanda is a breast cancer survivor and underwent chemotherapy in 2017 where she lost around 50% of her hair. Like most post breast cancer patients, Amanda is also on hormonal therapy, which can negatively impact the hair as well. Fortunately, most of Amanda’s hair has grown back. However, she is still experiencing thinning and is hoping to regain what she has lost.
Prior to coming to Medi Tresse, Amanda had tried minoxidil for nine months and had also begun taking some hair loss supplements. While many patients that undergo chemotherapy or radiation for cancer experience hair loss, recent research has shown that 40% of these patients do have some amount of permanent hair loss.
For patients that have breast cancer, patients typically go on estrogen blockers. These estrogen blockers are life saving treatments, but they can negatively impact the hair as they decrease the ratio of estrogen to testosterone. The hair loss caused by the estrogen blockers presents is consistent with androgenic alopecia, which is also known as Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL).
With all of our treatments, we have three main goals: stop further loss, make the hair you have thicker, healthier, and if possible regrow hair. We like to remind all of our patients that attaining any of these goals is a success.
Amanda decided to move forward with Painless PRP for her post chemotherapy hair loss treatments in Boston, MA. Painless PRP represents an advanced technique in Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. This eliminates the need for traditional needle injections while ensuring a pain-free experience.
This cutting-edge approach utilizes a specialized medical device. It converts the PRP into a powerful mist jet, enabling subdermal infusion into the scalp. By harnessing the inherent healing properties of platelet rich plasma, including activated growth factors and stem cells, this treatment effectively accelerates wound healing and promotes cellular regeneration.
Painless PRP is a simple in-office treatment that takes under an hour. Initially, Amanda came in for one treatment a month for three months.
While patients can start to notice positive changes in their hair in a few months, it typically takes 6 to 12 months to see significant results.
Amanda is happy with her current results. She will continue with Painless PRP booster treatments every 6 months to maintain results.
