Essential oils have become extremely trendy in 2019.  From being used for skin care and weight loss to stress relief and hair loss, it seems like every day we are hearing from experts on the benefits of essential oils. So what are essential oils? Essential oils are highly concentrated oils that are extracted from different plants.  Essential oils have grown in popularity as people have tried to turn to more natural treatments.

While there still needs to be more research on essential oils and the treatment of hair loss, a couple of studies have been complete.  In 2015, one study showed that rosemary oil was just as effective as 2% minoxidil (Formula 82M has 5% minoxidil) over a 6-month period.  In 1998, a randomized double-blind study was completed on patients with alopecia areata and showed some promise in the use thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood oils as a treatment, as 44% of the patients showed improvement with this combination.  There is still some debate on how effective essential oils can be in regrowing hair and more research needs to be done before stopping any proven treatments.  However, hair tends to dry out with age and over processing, and essential oils can help keep the scalp and hair healthy and moisturized.  Some of the recommended essential oils for health include:

  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Peppermint
  • Cedarwood
  • Tea Tree
  • Lemon

Before using essential oils, there are a few things to remember.  Essential oils are extremely concentrated and must be properly diluted before using.  While essential oils are natural, that does not mean they cannot cause side effects.  Essential oils can cause allergic reactions like rashes and irritation in some people.  As with any medication or supplement, it is important to discuss with your medical practitioner before starting.  Lastly, if you are concerned about hair loss or thinning it is important to meet with a hair loss specialists that can diagnose the cause of your loss and customize a treatment plan specific for you.
