As we all know, many solutions to problems come with a caveat: side effects. Fortunately, low level laser therapy, or LLLT for short, has an extremely high safety profile. Unlike many other treatments, there are no real side effects associated with LLLT. But before we get into possible, extremely rare, side effects with this revolutionary hair thinning treatment option, let’s talk about what LLLT is.
Low level laser therapy is a non-surgical treatment designed to promote more follicular activity and healthier hair growth, whereby red and near-infrared laser light encourages tissue repair and recovery. Experienced hair specialists use low-intensity lights to perform this non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that addresses female hair loss through the stimulation of follicle growth and encouragement of healthier hair growth.

Low-Level Laser Therapy gives patients a safe, comfortable treatment option to not only restore thinning hair but address visible hair loss as well. Low-level laser therapy has been shown to safely be used to promote hair restoration for patients who suffer from Androgenic Alopecia, Traction Alopecia, Scarring Alopecia, Telogen Effluvium, and Alopecia Areata.
Studies have found LLLT to be effective at treating hair loss in both women and men. This allows patients to enjoy thicker, healthier hair growth with more numerous hair shafts. The lasers used in this treatment are cool beam lasers, which means there is no risk of burning the skin. In turn, prolonged use is safe for all patients. Laser therapy is nothing new: it’s been used in medical care for 50+ years. LLLT is cleared by the FDA for fighting female hair loss, thanks to advancements in this technology.
Two major studies have been done on the effectiveness of LLLT for hair loss. Neither one found reports of significant LLLT side effects. In fact, 88 percent of participants saw improvement with LLLT.
Low-level laser therapy has a very high safety profile. And, because it uses cool beam lasers, there is no risk of burning the skin or scalp. Keep in mind is that some patients occasionally complain of their hair drying out a bit initially after treatment. A very small percentage of patients have reported headaches, but this is fortunately very rare.
The only contraindication for use would be people who have been diagnosed with skin cancer of the scalp, head, or neck. LLLT does not cause cancer and it has never been proven that LLLT has any effect on cancer cells.
However, in theory, LLLT does support cell replication. We here at Medi Tresse would rather play it safe when it comes to patients with a history of skin cancers of the scalp, head, or neck. We advise those patients to work with their dermatologist to determine if use of the LLLT device is appropriate. For everyone else, LLLT could be a viable option for you in treating hair loss and thinning hair. You can come in for a consultation and speak with one of our Medi Tresse hair loss specialists.
