Angela is a current patient at our Boston, MA Medi Tresse office and came to our staff about both her rapid hair loss as well as her concern about her scalp health. She was concerned that her skin issues were affecting her hair regrowth, as she has tried over-the-counter scalp shampoos, Minoxidil, and Low-Level Laser Therapy prior to coming to our office.
She came to us for an initial consultation, and Angela was diagnosed with androgenic alopecia, also known as Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), and severe eczema. While Angela had underlying androgenic alopecia, she was also experiencing hair loss due to chronic eczema, which was aggravating the condition.
When eczema occurs, the skin can become inflamed and damaged, making it difficult for hair follicles to grow through the skin. Additionally, eczema can cause itching, which can damage the hair causing breakage at root or further inflaming the scalp. One of her goals was to see if there was anything that could be done to help with both her hair loss and skin condition on her scalp.
With all of our treatments, we have three main goals: stop further loss, make the hair you have thicker, healthier, and if possible regrow hair. We like to remind all of our patients that attaining any of these goals is a success.
After her consultation, the Medi Tresse team and Angela agreed that the best treatment plan for her would be to utilize scalp cleanses and clobetasol for scalp eczema first, then Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) LaserCap® for her androgenic alopecia. It is important to have a healthy scalp first before being able to treat her androgenic alopecia diagnosis.
Clobetasol is a steroid medicine to help with itching and swelling for skin irritation. While the clobetasol was applied at home, Medi Tresse’s scalp cleanse detoxes have a special detoxifying solution that includes two special ingredients: aloe vera, which helps cleanse and detoxify with antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties; and hyaluronic acid, which has been known to improve hydration of the skin and proven to help wounds heal faster.
Our team utilizes a special device that uses pressurized air to accelerate this solution so that we can provide a deep exfoliation of the scalp and the hair follicles. Using this device, the Medi Tresse team is able to customize each scalp cleanse detox for what each patient needs, such as an itchy, flaky, dry, oily scalp.
Once she was able to have a healthier scalp and eczema had cleared up, Angela and our team were able to focus on treating her underlying androgenic alopecia, which the patient upgraded to the best available low-level laser device, the LaserCap®. The LaserCap® also has anti-inflammatory benefits, which will also benefit scalp health moving forward.
The LLLT LaserCap® is a non-surgical treatment option and is a device that utilizes Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) to stimulate the hair follicle cells to grow. It utilizes a cool beam laser that encourages tissue repair and recovery on the scalp. These forms of light are not capable of burning skin, which makes prolonged use safe for patients.
The LaserCap® is available for purchase at all our locations; you can receive your treatment in the comfort of your own home.
Angela is very happy that the Medi Tresse Boston team has been able to treat the scalp eczema and that her scalp health is improved. Now that this is taken care of and she has upgraded to a better low-level laser device, the Medi Tresse Boston team hopes to continue to see improvement in her loss from androgenic alopecia.
