As the New Year quickly approaches, if you are like most Americans, I am sure you have a list of New Year’s resolutions for 2019.  However, according to research only 8% of people keep their New Year’s resolutions! The best way to keep a New Year’s resolution is to keep it simple.  To help, we have come up with a few simple New Year’s resolutions for your hair that you can keep in 2019.

If you are still on the fence, 2019 is the year to finally see a hair loss specialist and start treatment. Prevention is truly the key to treating hair loss, as once the scalp is visible, up to 50% of your hair density has already been lost! Female-pattern hair loss (Androgenetic Alopecia) is progressive, meaning it gets worse over time.  As more and more hairs become “affected” they eventually go into hibernation, so to speak. In this dormant state, it is more difficult to fully restore a hair.  In 2019 take 60 minutes out of your schedule and meet with a hair loss specialist that can find the best treatment for you.

Stick with your treatment plan. If you are currently treating your hair loss, stick with it! Whether you are doing Formula 82M, using a Low Level Laser Therapy device, completing Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, or some combination of all of them, continue following the treatment protocol.  When patients come in for follow ups, they often cannot believe how great the before and after photos are, because it can sometimes be difficult to notice the results when you see your hair every day.  You honestly forget what your hair looked like before treatment.  Which brings us to our next resolution.

Come in for a follow up appointment. If you have been doing hair loss treatments, make sure to see your hair loss specialist for a follow up appointment. We recommend patients come in at least every 12 months, but ideally every 6 months for follow up.  This is extremely important to not only track changes in your hair, but also to make sure that any medical or lifestyle changes have not affected your hair.

Add a daily supplement to your diet. Your diet plays a huge role in the health of your hair. Unfortunately, for many of us we are not getting enough of the key nutrients and vitamins that play a pivotal role in hair health. Two great options are Nutrafol® and Viviscal®, which have been clinically proven to help with hair health.

Switch to an ammonia free hair color. Coloring your hair is still possible even if you are following all the rules of hair health. Just be sure to use an ammonia-free or low-ammonia formula. Ask your stylist about the most follicle-friendly options they have available at your salon.

These are just a few options for New Year’s resolutions for your hair health.  Most importantly we hope that you have a safe and healthy 2019!
