Published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, the study entitled “The effect of autologous activated platelet-rich plasma injection on female pattern hair loss: A randomized placebo-controlled study”, was conducted by Abeer Attia Tawfik MD and Mai Abdel Raouf Osman MD.
The purpose of the study was to “evaluate the efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of female pattern hair loss.” Thirty female patients that had been diagnosed with female pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) were chosen, and patients were randomly assigned to receive PRP injections and a placebo injection (saline) in selected areas. The results of the study were consistent with prior studies, as there was a statistical difference between the PRP and placebo areas for both hair density and hair thickness. Pictures that tracked the results showed marked improvement in both hair quality and improvement.
